Light-induced retinal damage has been interested in ophthalmic field, and also dental
field to deal with resin polymerized by visible light. In this study, ultrastructural
observation was performed to reveal morphological change of retina in rat exposed to
visible light originated from photo-touring unit used for polymerization of composite
resin. The visible light was exposed variably on eye of rat for 20 to 60 minutes at one
time to one group continuously and the other intermittently. There after retinal changes
induced by continuous and intermittent light-exposure were compared.
The results were as follows :
1. Photoreceptic myelin membranes were transformed into vesicular structures and
outer segment become pear-shaped bodies in the periods of 60 minutes and 120 minutes
exposures. Inner segment showed swollen mitochondria with vacuoles, and pigment
epithelium cntained swollen mitochondria and myelin bodies.
2. There were no distinctive differences in the ultrastrucutral changes between single
and intermittent exposures in the increased amount of total right exposure. Myelin
membranes of interimittent exposure group were also isolated and transformed into
vesicular structures, and this fact strongly suggested the cumulative effect of repeated
exposures.
3. In the intermittent exposure group, the retina of two minutes exposure was more
severely damaged than that of one minute exposure.
4. In the seven days after continuous exposure of 20 minutes, most of disc repaired to
normal findings except a few of it disclosed the fingerprint-like arrangement.
